dear congressperson...what's up?!

Longfellow is waxing politics - I like it. So you up for some letter writing? The library here in NYC is having a letter-writing campaign to try and stop the mayor's budget cuts. I guess we have to save money so we can go and kill people to stop genocide (okay so maybe that isn't part of the budget cuts here, I was just being a smartass). You are right Deeds - it is a tough issue. My also pacifist philosophy can't seem to wrap around the idea of force/violence to solve problems. Yet there is so much divide in our world. I was actually just thinking about this today - I am reading Kite Runner and just wondering what it would be like for our country to be as war-torn as say Afghanistan or as poor as Africa. It is all so drastically different. But it isn't just us - Canada, Europe, etc. also participate in this divide - I guess it is the "Great 8" and then the rest of those we try to help by raising "awareness" but I just wonder now that we are all aware, what do we do?

It is a cool day here in NYC - cloudy, but not really rainy. I have the apartment to myself right now, which has been a wonderful opportunity for me to just relax. Since I don't have my own room (in the sense that I can't close the door and claim my space) it feels nice to be able to have an interrupted segment of time to do as I please. This morning I went to Central Park to cheer on my friend Johanna in a half-marathon she ran with her mom. I ran with them for a couple of miles, which was fun. I wish I could've done more, but oh well. Maybe one day I will train and see what happens. Watching all of the healthy runner people it brought up a host of feelings from years past - when my elementary gym teacher told me I could get an A if I lost weight. Sometimes I think my subsequent semi-success in athletics was part love of the game and part vindication.

Now the decision is do I get off my couch and go hang out with friends or stick around here and enjoy a quiet evening. After the busy week I have had, I am leaning towards staying in, but we'll see what happens.

I am going to be in the Midwest next week for a little bit. It would be nice to see each and every one of you if possible. Til then you are in my thoughts and on my computer screen.

much love

sc :)
